Olivier Giroud picks up hamstring injury in Bournemouth win

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed striker Olivier Giroud is a doubt with a hamstring injury picked up in the weekend win over Bournemouth. The French international was a late introduction from the bench, setting up Alexis Sanchez to make it 3-1 at the death, but reportedly pulled the muscle not long after coming on.

“The only worry we have is Giroud. He looked to touch his hamstring. We have to see how deep the damage is. He told me on his first movement he felt a twinge,” said Wenger. The 30-year-old has been used sparingly this season, playing second fiddle to Alexis Sanchez in his preferred No.9 role, but has impressed from the bench so Arsenal won’t want to lose him.

Lucas Perez is returning from his own recent injury and may be brought into the matchday squad in place of Giroud if the latter’s hamstring problem keeps him out of action for a number of weeks. The London club are currently suffering a fitness crisis in the winter months and haven’t been at their creative best of late as a result.

Arsenal have relied on Giroud’s cameo appearances in many games but could be without last season’s top goalscorer until later in December.
