Mauricio Pochettino “completely” surprised us with Spurs tactics, says Arsenal’s star
Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to play with a three-man defence caught the Gunners by surprise today.
Pochettino unexpectedly elected to switch his formation for the North London derby and Arsenal initially struggled to cope with Tottenham’s new system.
The game eventually ended 1-1, with Harry Kane equalising from the spot for Tottenham after Kevin Wimmer’s own goal had given Arsenal the lead.
“It was a difficult game,” Walcott told post-match reporters.
“We didn’t create as much as we wanted. Maybe if you look back at it, it’s a good result in the end.
Asked about Pochettino’s tactical decision to play three at the back, Walcott added: “Yeah it did surprise us, completely actually.”
Both teams had opportunities to win the game, but the rivals each had to settle for a point in the end, with Arsenal extending their unbeaten sequence in all competitions to 16 games.
