Arsenal starting line-up against Reading

Arsenal host Championship opposition in the EFL Cup tomorrow night as Reading make the journey to the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners, on paper at least, have the easiest tie in the competition out of their Premier League rivals- but there could still be a slip-up.

After being held to a goalless draw at Middlesbrough on Saturday, Arsenal saw their seven-match winning run in all competitions brought to a close. Meanwhile, Reading won 1-0 at Preston to secure their first victory in five matches this season.

All the pointers may indicate a comfortable win for the Gunners but Arsene Wenger will certainly shuffle his pack ahead of a busy two weeks for Arsenal, where they face Sunderland, Ludogorets and Tottenham Hotspur.

The French striker gets a hounding from the press and fans alike but in Arsenal’s draw at the weekend, there was a very obvious Olivier Giroud shaped hole in the Gunners attack. The lack of presence in the box restricted Arsenal’s options but the former Montpellier man returns from injury.

He’s likely to start on the bench, with Lucas Perez leading the line, but Wenger will almost certainly give him game time to bolster his match fitness for the coming weeks. If he can find his feet quickly, then Arsenal will possess a superb Plan B for games where they’re struggling to break down the opposition.
