Arsenal Star Suffers Massive Injury Blow, Out For ‘A While’

Arsenal youngster Chuba Akpom has announced that he has suffered a back injury. The 20-year-old, yesterday, posted a picture of himself on working in a gym on his Instagram account with the caption “Gutted to be out for a while with this back injury. Ill be back stronger”

It is a huge setback for the young striker who was hoping to make his way into Arsene Wenger’s first team this season. Akpom impressed during pre-season and was our leading goalscorer. It was probably why Wenger decided against sending him on another loan and kept him at the club. He spent last season on a loan move with Hull City and scored three goals in 36 league appearances. He had a bit of a falling out with former Hull manager Steve Bruce, but managed to make his way back into his team plans towards the end of the season.

Akpom didn’t get a chance appear in Premier League with us this season due to our depth in forward areas, but he did make an impressed in the League Cup game against Nottingham Forrest.

He surely is a promising talent, but the kind of forward options we have at the moment means that he is not going to get many chances in Premier League unless something drastic happens. His only hope of impressing Wenger at the time are our League Cup games, and it will be a huge setback for him if he ends up missing our fourth-round clash with Reading City due to his injury. We are scheduled to welcome the Royals to Emirates Stadium in the week starting from October 24.

As things stand at the moment, it’s very hard to see Akpom making a similar kind of impact this season as Alex Iwobi did last season.

I really don’t see him appearing for us other than cup games, and in all likelihood, he will depart on another loan move in January- maybe this time to a lower table Premier League club.

There are parallels to be drawn between Akpom and our former striker Benik Afobe. Afobe was also a talented striker, but his injury problems hindered his progress with us, and he ended up joining Championship club Wolves in search of regular playing table.

Akpom is in a crucial stage of his career with us, and he awaits a similar fate to Afobe unless he manages to stake his place in Wenger’s plans soon.
